The Italian Foreign Minister, Franco Frattini, has said 10,000 people have been killed in Libya and 55,000 have been wounded since the conflict began in February.
He said the figures were given to him during talks in Rome with the leader of the Libyan rebels' governing body, Mustafa Abdel Jalil.
The figures cannot be independently confirmed.
Mr Jalil is visiting several European countries to try to get more support for the rebels' military campaign.
James Robbins reports.
