Bukit Antarabangsa Tragedy: Military attache mistaken for looter

KUALA LUMPUR: Security forces in Bukit Antarabangsa ran into confusion yesterday when they mistook the military attache to the Myanmar embassy as a looter.

The misunderstanding cropped up when officers on guard duty near the Myanmar ambassador's home saw the attache entering the house wearing army fatigues.

Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said the officers became suspicious and brought him to the registration area of the operations centre to verify his identity.

After his identity was confirmed, he was allowed to return to the house on condition that he did not wear fatigues.

"It turns out that he was there to help the ambassador move some belongings. It was a misunderstanding and the officers were doing their job."

Khalid stressed that they were very strict about who goes in and out of the area, with several checkpoints set up and manned by traffic police to ensure that only house owners can enter their homes.

"We very well can't have someone go in as Ahmad and come out as Othman."

Khalid also warned rumour-mongers to stop fanning insecurity among residents.

He singled out a rumour that uniformed soldiers simply entered a condominium unit at Kyoto Gardens and started carrying things out.

"We found out that it was true, but this was carried out on the orders of a general who owned that unit. He simply asked the soldiers to help him move his personal effects.

"I urge those who are spreading such rumours to stop because it will only cause unnecessary panic and make security work more difficult."

Case of mistaken identity

KUALA LUMPUR: The Myanmar embassy's military attache did not have a run-in with police at the Bukit Antarabangsa landslide area on Monday. Capt (Navy) Aung Thaw said a Myanmar, Nyan Win Naing, had sought help from the embassy to transport his belongings from his rented house in Bukit Antarabangsa. Aung had supervised the shifting. They left Nyan's house about 3pm and a local driver hired by his office transported the items out. The police mistook the local driver for a looter and took him in for questioning. Aung said when they received news of the incident, the ambassador contacted the police chief to explain the matter. http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Wednesday/National/2424484/Article/index_html
