Two Riot Police Killed, Two Injured in Altercation
Two riot police were stabbed to death and another two were critically injured on Friday in an altercation with local youth in Sittwe, the capital of Arakan State.
A witness said, "The incident took place in the evening around 9:30 pm in Kathay Wra Ward on the outskirts of Sittwe, after a quarrel between a group of riot police and local youths there."
The quarrel was reportedly started when the group of unarmed riot police was inebriated and disturbed the five local youths as they were playing guitars in front of a house in Kathay Wra Ward.
During the quarrel, the riot police allegedly assaulted the youths first, and the youths then retaliated with knives, inflicting fatal and serious injuries on the four police. Two of the riot police died at the scene while two were rescued by fellow police and driven out of the ward to get medical attention for critical injuries.
After the attack, the youth fled from the scene to unknown locations where they continue to evade search efforts by the authority in Sittwe.
"Many police forces have been deployed in the ward since then to look for the youth, but no one has been arrested yet. However, the authority is interrogating their relatives about the incident," the witness said.
The incident came about after authorities had deployed riot police in Sittwe to prevent protests by local monks against the government.
It was also learned that the riot polices who were involved in the incident are from a platoon that is stationed at the office of the local ward council in Kathay Wra.
