Credentials Challenge Victory Will Make History
New York , September 17, 08

While we honor those heroes that sacrificed and are sacrificing their lives fighting for freedom and democracy for the people of Burma , we welcome the action of Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, and thank His Excellency for considering to forward the request made by the Members of Parliament Union ( Burma ) to the Credentials Committee.

On September 9, the democratic forces led by the National Council of the Union of Burma officially challenged the credentials of the military junta of Burma at the UN.

As for the members of Burma Point, we are grateful to have known of the MPU’s, which consists of 1990 election winners, request being considered at the UN. It means that justice for our people is almost served. We are confident that it will be served once the majority of the member nations stand for our people.

In the meantime, we condemn the military generals in Burma for not cooperating with the UN special envoy Mr. Ibrahim Gambari, when he visited the country on Aug. 18 to implement 5 issues including the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners. However, Mr. Gambari’s mission resulted in disappointment and the military generals, who consistently ignored the international calls to reconcile the nation’s political deadlock, are to blame.

The day for our people to see their legal government representing them is long over due. Thus, as members of Burma Point, we have been enthusiastically participating and collaborating with the NCUB, we particularly endorse the MPU’s call to restore democratically elected representative at the Burma seat of the United Nations.

Mya Mya Soe, Burma Point director of Committee for International Movement says, “We know that in addition to millions of citizens inside Burma , many exile Burmese people from Thailand to Singapore to Japan to England to United States are in support of this credentials issue. Now, all we need is the international communities’ total support and we kindly request the new Credentials Committee members to recognize our legitimately elected leaders and not the military junta of Burma .”

Lastly but not the least, we call on everyone from governments of nations to leaders of organizations to let the justice bell ring at the United Nations for the suffering people of Burma . We humbly advise that waiting for the junta to change is just wasting away many innocent lives in Burma . Please help stop the killings and let’s start by removing the SPDC, illegitimate government, from power at the United Nations. Our struggle for human freedom and dignity in Burma will only prevail when everyone from the free world supports us.
