Walker crosses country to raise awareness for Burma

If they can make it there, they can make it anywhere. In this case the 3,000 mile walk between Portland, Ore. and New York, N.Y., is being done to bring awareness to human rights violations in Myanmar (Burma).

On Friday, Zaw Min Htwe carried the American Flag and the flag of Burmese democracy through Washington on his way to the United Nations Building in New York. During the trip through Washington County, Zaw carried the banners while his brother Athein Min Htwe followed in a truck. Every 15 miles the two trade places. The walk began March 1 and they expect to reach the United Nations Building on Aug. 8.

"It is for freedom, democracy and human rights for Burma," Zaw said, his English still tempered with a Burmese accent after only spending four years in the United States. "I cannot live in my country and I cannot live in Thailand. We lived in a refugee camp. We do not have a future there. That is what America sponsor us to come here."

Zaw and Athein said they both fought for democracy in Burma. They explained after protests in August 1988, Athein and Zaw found themselves marked by the government. They became refugees and joined a group of students who traveled to the Thai border. The students became an organization called "All Burma Student Democratic Front." Athein hopes to present the petition to the United Nations of Aug. 8, the 20-year anniversary of 3,000 demonstrators being killed by their government in what has been dubbed "the 8-8-88 protests."

"Right now in my country people's government don't care about them," Zaw said.

မနက္ ၁၁ နာရီ ခြဲခါနီး ေလာက္မွာေတာ့ သူတို႔အိမ္နဲ႔ သိပ္မေ၀းလွတဲ့ ကမ္းနားက ေလၾကမ္းေတြ တ၀ုန္း၀ုန္းနဲ႔ တိုက္ခတ္ လာခဲ့ပါတယ္။ တုိက္ခတ္လာတဲ့ ေလၾကမ္းနဲ႔အတူ ကမ္းနားမွာ ဒီေရကလည္း တရိပ္ရိပ္ တက္လာ တယ္။ ဒီေရတက္ၿပီး ေလၾကမ္းေတြတိုက္တာဟာ မိုးဦးက်ေလဦးက် ျဖစ္ေလ့ျဖစ္ထ ရွိတဲ့အတြက္ ေဒၚက်င္လွ စိတ္ထဲမွာ သိပ္မထူးဆန္းသလို ခံစားခဲ့ရတယ္။ အိမ္ေရွ႕မွာ ေဆာ့ကစားေနတဲ့ ေျမးငယ္ေလးေတြကို အိမ္ေပၚ တက္ဖို႔ ေခၚၿပီး သူတို႔ တထပ္အိမ္ေလးရဲ႕ အိမ္တံခါးေတြကို လိုက္ပိတ္ ေနခဲ့ပါတယ္။

ေန႔လယ္ ၁ နာရီေက်ာ္ခ်ိန္မွာေတာ့ “၀ုန္း” ဆိုတဲ့ အသံႀကီးနဲ႔အတူ သူ႔အိမ္ေလးကို လူတရပ္ျမင့္တဲ့ ေရလႈိင္းႀကီး တခု လာေရာက္႐ိုက္ခတ္ၿပီး ၿဖဳိခ်လိုက္ပါေတာ့တယ္။ သူလည္း ေျမးေလးေတြရဲ႕လက္ကို က်စ္က်စ္ပါ ေအာင္ဆုပ္ၿပီး ၿပဳိက်ေနတဲ့ အိမ္ထဲက ႐ုန္းကန္ထြက္လိုက္ပါတယ္။ ဒါေပမယ့္ အိမ္ျပင္ကို ေရာက္တယ္ဆိုရင္ပဲ အလြန္ျပင္းထန္ၿပီး အလြန္ျမင့္တဲ့ လႈိင္းလုံးႀကီးေတြ ထပ္႐ိုက္ခတ္လာပါတယ္။

သူ႔ရဲ႕မ်က္၀န္းအိမ္မွာ မ်က္ရည္ေတြနဲ႔ ဆားငန္ေရေတြ ေရာေထြးေနပါတယ္။ အလြန္ေရစီး ျမန္တဲ့ေရ လႈိင္းေတြထဲမွာ သူလည္း ျမဳပ္ခ်ီ၊ ေပၚခ်ီျဖစ္ေနပါတယ္။ ေရကူးတတ္ေပမယ့္ ျမန္ဆန္လြန္းတဲ့ ေရစီးက သူ႔ကိုကူး ခတ္ခြင့္ မေပးေတာ့ပါဘူး။ သူအသက္ ရွင္ဖို႔ဆိုတာ မျဖစ္ႏုိင္ေတာ့ဘူးလို႔ ေကာင္းေကာင္း နားလည္လိုက္ပါၿပီ။ ေလနီၾကမ္း၊ ေရလႈိင္းေတြနဲ႔ အတူ မိုးေတြပါရြာလာ တယ္။ ေရစီးနဲ႔ ေမ်ာေနတဲ့လူေတြ ကၽြဲႏြားေတြ၊ အိမ္ေတြ ၊ သစ္ပင္ေတြကို သူျမင္လိုက္ရတယ္။ “ကယ္ပါ” ဆိုတဲ့ အသံေတြ လည္း ၾကားေနရတယ္။

ရြာတဲ့ မိုးစက္မိုးေပါက္ေတြက သူ႔အသားကို မီးစနဲ႔ထိုးသလို ခံစားရပါတယ္။ သူ အသက္႐ႈလို႔ မရေတာ့ဘူး။ သူ႔သားေတြ၊ သမီးေတြ ၊ ေျမးငယ္ေလးေတြရဲ႕ မ်က္ႏွာေလးေတြကို သူ႔ရဲ႕မ်က္လုံးထဲမွာ တခုၿပီးတခု ျမင္ေယာင္ေနမိၿပီ။ ေနာက္ဆုံး အခ်ိန္မွာ သူ မ်က္လံုးကိုမွိတ္ၿပီး ဘုရားကို အာရုံျပဳလိုက္တယ္။

ကံေကာင္းတယ္လို႔ ေျပာရမလား မဆိုႏိုင္ဘူး သူ ေရစီးနဲ႔အတူေမ်ာပါရင္း ႐ုတ္တရက္ တစုံတခုနဲ႔ တိုက္မိသြား တယ္။ မ်က္လုံးဖြင့္ၿပီး တုိက္မိတဲဲ႔အရာကို အမိအရလွမ္းဆြဲလိုက္တယ္။ ကံၾကမၼာက သူ႔ကို မ်က္ႏွာသာေပးတယ္ ထင္ပါရဲ႕။ သူ လွမ္းဆြဲလိုက္တာဟာ ေရစီးမွာယိမ္းႏြဲ႕ေနတဲ့သစ္ပင္ႀကီးတပင္ ျဖစ္လို႔ ေနတယ္။ ေရက အရွိန္နဲ႔ စီးေနေပမယ့္ သူဆုပ္ကိုင္ထားတဲ့ အပင္ႀကီးကို ေမ်ာပါသြားေအာင္ မစြမ္းေဆာင္ႏုိင္ပါဘူး။

“ေ႐ႊဂုံတိုင္နဲ႔ ဟာမစ္တစ္ တေၾကာလုံးမွာ လုံၿခံဳေရးက မီးသတ္ကားေတြရွိတယ္၊ လုံထိန္းေတြက တ႐ုတ္က ထုတ္တဲ့ကား ေတြနဲ႔ ေ႐ႊဂုံတိုင္မွာပဲ ၁၂ စီးေတြ႕တယ္၊ စစ္ကားေတာ့ လုံးဝမေတြ႕ရဘူး”ဟု ျမင္ေတြ႕ခဲ့ရသူ တဦးက ေျပာသည္။

ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္းစုၾကည္၏ ေနအိမ္ေရွ႕တြင္လည္း ရဲကား ၊ မီးသတ္ကား၊ အခ်ဳပ္ကားမ်ားျဖင့္ လုံၿခံဳေရး ထူထပ္စြာခ်ထား သည္ကို ေတြ႕ျမင္ခဲ့ရသည္ဟု ၎က ဆက္ေျပာသည္။

ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္းစုၾကည္သည္ ၂၀၀၃ ခုႏွစ္ ေမလတြင္ ျဖစ္ပြားခဲ့ေသာ ဒီပဲယင္း အၾကမ္းဖက္တိုက္ခိုက္မႈအၿပီးမွ စတင္၍ ေနအိမ္အက်ယ္ခ်ဳပ္ျဖင့္ ထိန္းသိမ္းခံေနရသည္မွာ ၅ ႏွစ္ ရွိၿပီျဖစ္သည္။ ၁၉၈၉ ခုႏွစ္မွစ၍ ေနအိမ္ အက်ယ္ခ်ဳပ္ ဘဝျဖင့္ ေနရခ်ိန္ စုစုေပါင္းမွာ ၁၂ ႏွစ္ေက်ာ္ၿပီျဖစ္သည္။

Suu Kyi's house arrest extended

DEMOCRACY leader Aung San Suu Kyi's house arrest has been extended, Burmese officials said today.

Authorities informed her of the decision in a brief meeting today at her Rangoon home.
"Her house arrest has already been extended,'' one official sid.

Seven officials visited her lakeside home around 4pm (1930 AEST), and delivered the news during a 10-minute meeting, the official said.

A second official confirmed the extension, but neither could give any details about the detention order, including the length of her confinement in her home.

Sources closed to the NLD said that 15 NLD youth members who were arrested while marching toward Daw Auung San Suu Kyi's Residence. There were arrested by soldiers and special branch police near her residence.

They have distributed leaflets, shorting slogans while they were marching towards her residence before being arrested. They were marching from NLD HQs while on lookers cheering the NLD youth during marching.

NLD members detained en route to Daw Suu’s house

May 27, 2008 (DVB)–Eighteen members of the National League for Democracy have been detained in Rangoon on their way to the house of detained NLD leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

The NLD members were marching along Kabaraye Pagoda Road to Aung San Suu Kyi’s house on University Avenue to call for her release from house arrest when they were detained, witnesses said.

They had begun their protest at 1pm in front of the NLD headquarters, where a group of around 50 people assembled, shouting slogans calling for Aung San Suu Kyi’s arrest and the lifting of restrictions on international aid to cyclone victims.

At 2pm a smaller group of 24 NLD members wearing party uniforms headed towards University Avenue but were stopped by government authorities who pulled up in a truck as they made their way past Hnin Si Gone rest home.

The authorities, who included members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and Swan Arr Shin, told them to return to the NLD headquarters.

When the NLD members refused to go back, 18 of them were forcibly put in the back of a truck.

Those detained included four NLD members from Hlaing Tharyar township, two each from San Chaung, Mingalardon and Dala, and one from Kyi Myint Taing.

Kyaw Myi Naing from Tamwe and tutor U Aung Phe from Ton Tay were also among those detained, along with Htet Htet Oo Wei from Shwe Pyi Tahr and her 12-year-old son Ye Yint Min Htet Oo.

It was not clear where the NLD members were taken.

Burma' junta has arrested 20 people trying to march to the home of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on the day her latest year-long stretch of house arrest is due to expire, a witness and opposition sources said.

The youth members of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) had been trying to get to the detained Nobel laureate's home, which has been sealed off by barbed-wired barricades at the nearest major junction, the sources said.

A Reuters reporter saw at least six police trucks, a prison van and a fire engine parked near the NLD headquarters before a ceremony to mark the latest phase of Suu Kyi's house arrest.

There has been no word on the detention order, although few expect the military to do anything but roll it over, even though such a move is bound to create tensions with Western nations who have promised millions of dollars in cyclone aid.

Donors pledged nearly $US50 million in aid at a landmark conference on Sunday in the wake of Cyclone Nargis, which has left 134,000 people dead or missing and another 2.4 million clinging to survival in the Irrawaddy delta.

Aung San Suu Kyi has spent more than 12 of the last 18 years in prison or under house arrest. Her latest stretch of detention started "for her own protection" after clashes between her supporters and pro-junta thugs near the town of Depayin on May 30, 2003.

However, her formal house arrest under a state security law did not start until November 27 of that year. It was renewed once for six months, and has since been renewed every year on or around May 27.

Suu Kyi's party won more than 80 per cent of seats in a 1990 election, but was denied power by the military, which has ruled Burma since a 1962 coup.

At least six police trucks, a prison van and a fire engine have been parked near the headquarters of Ms Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party, which is due to hold a ceremony this afternoon.

Amid rumours of a planned NLD march to Ms Suu Kyi's house, police moved a wooden and barbed-wired barricade across the road up to the nearest major intersection, making it impossible even to approach the lakeside villa.

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — Police in Myanmar have detained more than a dozen members of Aung San Suu Kyi's opposition party.
The members of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy were marching Tuesday from the party's headquarters to her home when riot police shoved the group into a truck.
It was not immediately clear where the truck was headed or exactly how many people were detained.
Suu Kyi has been detained for more than 12 of the past 18 years, mostly under house arrest.
Security was stepped up around Suu Kyi's home as the military junta faced a deadline to decide whether extend her current period of house arrest or release her.
